Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to prep your concrete for epoxy coating.


Why Proper Preparation Matters

Epoxy coatings are known for their durability, chemical resistance, and aesthetic appeal. However, if the surface isn't properly prepared, issues like peeling, bubbling, or discoloration can occur. Proper preparation enhances adhesion and extends the lifespan of the epoxy coating, saving you time and money in the long run.


Preparing your concrete for an epoxy coating is crucial for achieving a long-lasting, durable finish. Follow these straightforward steps to ensure a successful application!


Step 1: Have All the Right Equipment

Before you begin, make sure you have the following tools and materials:

  • Concrete grinder

  • Concrete patching compound

  • Epoxy coating

  • Moisture meter or plastic sheet for testing

  • Protective gear (gloves, goggles, mask)

  • Vacuum


Step 2: Conduct a Hardness Test

If you're using diamond tools and have a commercial grinder, it's essential to perform a hardness test to determine the type of concrete you're working with—soft, medium, hard, or ultra-hard. Getting this right is crucial; using the wrong tooling can lead to burning through hundreds of dollars in equipment.


Step 3: Grind Your Surface and Edges

Use a concrete grinder to roughen the surface of the concrete. Focus on the edges as well to ensure good adhesion. Aim for a profile similar to 80-grit sandpaper. This step is essential, especially for smooth or old concrete.


Step 4: Repair Any Damage

Inspect the concrete for any cracks or holes.

  • For Deep Cracks: Fill the crack with sand up to 75% full, then top it off with your crack fill if you’re using a liquid formula. This will help prevent the crack fill from sinking too deep.

  • For Shallow Cracks: If using a paste formula, you typically won’t need to add sand. Just apply the paste according to the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring a smooth and even surface.

After the patching compound has dried, check for any unevenness. If the patch isn't fully smooth, you can grind over it after it has cured to achieve a level surface.


Step 5: Vacuum Your Surface Area

After grinding and repairing, thoroughly vacuum the entire area, including any cracks. It is crucial that you do your very best vacuuming; this can make or break your bond for laying down any type of epoxy. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to have a great vacuum. If you’re unsure whether you've vacuumed well enough, you can use a microfiber cloth to wipe the floor, with or without acetone, to ensure all dust and residues are removed.


Step 6: Check for Moisture

After vacuuming, look for any darker spots on the surface, as they may indicate moisture issues. To confirm, conduct a moisture test by placing a plastic sheet over a small area for 24 hours. If condensation forms underneath, it indicates moisture problems that need addressing before applying epoxy.


Step 7: Apply Primer Coat (If Needed)

Depending on the epoxy product you're using, a primer coat may be necessary. If recommended, apply the primer evenly across the surface and allow it to cure as per the manufacturer’s instructions.
